Condition Overview
Perimenopause vs. Menopause
Perimenopause is the transitional period between a woman’s reproductive years and menopause. The average age for perimenopause to begin is around 40, but it can vary.
Hormone levels fluctuate during perimenopause, particularly estrogen and progesterone. This imbalance can cause unpleasant and unexpected symptoms, such as hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness.
These symptoms can vary from woman to woman. The severity of symptoms can also vary, some women experience only mild symptoms, while for others, the symptoms may be so severe that they interfere with daily life.
When your ovaries stop producing eggs, you are in menopause. This usually happens around age 51, but it can happen earlier or later.
Menopause is when a woman has not had a menstrual cycle for 12 consecutive months. It’s important to note that this isn’t a finite event, but a process, as you transition from perimenopause into menopause.
This transition is usually gradual. However, certain health factors can accelerate this, including:
- Chronic health conditions like diabetes or insulin resistance
- Smoking
- Genetics
- Obesity
- Malnutrition
- Serious illnesses like cancer, which can disrupt hormone production
Estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, pregnenolone, DHEA, and thyroid levels can decline during menopause, which leads to a variety of symptoms.
Perimenopause & Menopause Symptoms Can Overlap
The symptoms you experience during this time of hormonal change can definitely overlap. This is particularly true as you get closer to your menstrual cycle stopping completely.
The most common symptoms include:
- Hot flashes, night sweats
- Fatigue
- Sleep difficulties
- Weight gain or trouble losing weight
- Irritability, anxiety, and/or depression
- Trouble concentrating
- Irregular, heavier, or lighter periods
- Inability to handle stress
- Decreased muscle tone
- Hair loss or changes in hair texture
- Dry, sagging, or thinning skin
- Thinning eyelashes and/or eyebrows
- Memory issues and/or brain fog
- Joint aches, inflammation
- Acne
- Vaginal atrophy (thinning, drying, inflammation)
- Decreased libido
- Painful intercourse
- Osteopenia/osteoporosis
You can feel better during this time, as bioidentical hormone replacement therapy can help balance your hormones.
